Outdoor Wednesday

A visit to the Sea Turtle Rescue...

I have always loved Sea Turtles...
And when I was in Texas in South Padre Island I was able to visit the Rescue!
A very interesting day indeed!

Here are the photos I took:

Here is a healthy turtle ready to be released back into the ocean...
It washed up on shore during a storm and they nursed him back to health.

This one will never be released back into the wild...
A shark bit off its back fins and it can't swim...

The Rescue is experimenting with a device that attaches to him to give him balance to at least swim every day at the habitat...
It works quite well!

This poor little guy is called "Patch" and he got a wound on his shell from a propeller!
They are trying to help him heal but this kind of wound takes a long time to heal and in the wild is usually fatal! This beautiful Turtle was so lucky to be found by a passer by and the rescue was called. He's gonna make it with time on his side now.

This poor baby was sick... and stayed still too long and barnacles grew on its shell... Normally in the wild this will kill a sea turtle but he was found and the amazing people at the rescue are doing the best they can to kill off the barnacles so they can release this beautiful baby back to the ocean.

Its taking a while but its working!
They keep him most of the day on a mat with its out of the water...
that will kill off the barnacles.
Click the photo to enlarge the detail.
Poor baby... you could "Feel" his misery and burden.

For my birthday Hubby bought me a nest of eggs (in my name only) and they hatch them and release them into the wild...
I wish I could be there the day they go back to the ocean!
Here is a photo of the release last July 4th:

Cute Baby ready to be released:
Sorry its so blurry... we couldn't use flash on the babies...

  1. What wonderful people taking care of these precious sea turtles! I do worry about what will happen to any baby turtles in the gulf this year.... with all that oil out there.... it's not good.

  2. What a heart-warming post. Thank you for taking the time to save our sea turtles. I too worry about the effects of the oil on all our sea creatures.

    Thanks for sharing,

  3. What a fabulous and informative post. Great pictures of the turtles. When my boys were little and we lived on Anna Maria Island, I volunteered with the sea turtle rescue group. It was great!

  5. So interesting! They can't just scrape the barnacles off the turtle ..., I guess not.
